Allergies / Haze Impact Everyone!! Will Air Conditioner Help??
Are you afflicted at this time of year with a runny nose, itchy eyes and difficulty breathing?
Hay fever or allergic rhinitis is prevalent at this time of year, and it can make a much larger impact than you may think.
Allergies impact a very large percentage of the population. Therefore, the symptoms they suffer will impact all of us at some time or another. You may never suffer from allergic reactions, but you could suffer from the flow-on effect these symptoms can cause.
Many people think that hay fever is just a runny nose or itchy eyes. Non-sufferers compassion towards sufferers may be minimal, due to a lack of understanding.
Research has shown that allergies affecting the ear, nose, and throat can also cause a lack of the ability to get a good night’s sleep and also chronic fatigue. The flow-on effect of this is decreased efficiency and productivity in the workplace and absenteeism.
The American Academy of Allergy, Asthma, and Immunology estimate that allergies impact the productivity for US companies to a cost of approximately $250 million per year. This cost is a direct impact on the financial viability for many companies.
But, not all respiratory allergies are exacerbated by the season. Pet hair, dander, dust, mites, or mould can cause a reaction at any time of the year.
What Can I Do to Prevent A Reaction?
The easy answer is to avoid what it is that causes your reaction. But, this is not always practical, especially if your reaction is due to seasonal or weather changes. The below is a list of the most common things you can do to reduce or prevent a reaction:
- Keep all windows and doors closed and sealed to prevent penetration from airborne pollen.
- Monitor pollen counts and remain indoors when pollen levels are high
- Allergy-proof your home removing any dust mites, pet hair or mold
- Vacuum carpets, rugs and furniture often
- If possible keep your pets outside.
- Hire a cleaner, if possible, to clean the high mold areas of your home like the basement or garage.
- Install air purifiers or dehumidifiers and make sure these are cleaned regularly
- Check humidity levels in your home – make sure it is below 50% to prevent the growth of mold.
Can Air Conditioners Help?
Yes, they can. A well maintained and serviced air conditioner can help filter the air within your home or workplace. It is recommended that HEPA filters are installed into the unit. These must be cleaned regularly following the manufacturer’s guidelines. This is as easy as cleaning the filter on your vacuum. Dirty air filters will have an adverse effect on the performance of the unit as well as the health of the occupants of the home.
Further to this, make sure you have your air conditioner expertly cleaned at least annually. A complete hygienic clean of your a/c unit will ensure that you are breathing clean air and your machine is running efficiently
An expert or specialist cleaner should clean all aspects of your a/c unit. Before you hire them, make sure they will:
- Check the air conditioner is working before the service
- Check the chill factor before the clean
- Check the air flow of the unit
- Remove and clean the filters
- Remove and clean all plastic fascia(s)
- Clean the scroll fan and surround
- Clean the evaporator (coil)
- Clean and check the drain(s)
- Dry-clean all electrical components (PC Boards)
- Reassemble air conditioner
- Check the chill factor after the clean
- Check air flow after the clean
- Sanitise inside the unit
- Check and clean the remote controller
- Clean the condenser (outside unit)
- Clean up any mess
- National Asthma Council Australia Sensitive Choice Program approved cleaning method.
